Turnmill

Description:

A Landmark of Craftsmanship and Material Innovation

Sitting at a prominent corner in Clerkenwell Green Conservation Area, Turnmill is a carefully crafted response to its historic surroundings. The design team sought to balance robust materiality with refined detailing, drawing inspiration from Clerkenwell’s industrial heritage and Barbara Hepworth’s sculptural forms.

A defining feature of the building is its sweeping curved façade, designed to guide pedestrian movement - an element that became even more relevant with the opening of Farringdon Crossrail station. The façade is brought to life through handmade Roman-format Petersen Tegl Kolumba bricks, creating a distinctive horizontal rhythm that continues seamlessly from the exterior into the building’s curved entrance.

The brickwork required bespoke craftsmanship, from deep chamfered window reveals that enhance views and texture to the precisely tailored masonry shaping Turnmill’s striking form. EBM was closely involved in developing the special shapes and selecting the right materials, ensuring the bricks not only complemented the surrounding architecture but also met the project’s unique and complex design standards.

Turnmill remains a benchmark for sustainable, high-quality design, demonstrating how thoughtful material selection and expert craftsmanship create enduring architectural landmarks.
