This unique residential project showcases the innovative use of EBM Supplies' brick products in creating a striking modern home in London. The architect, who designed their own residence, utilized a combination of matte black engineering bricks, perforated bricks, and the newly developed "Black Volcano" brick to create a façade that responds to changing light conditions throughout the day. The building's design draws inspiration from other black buildings in the street, while introducing a distinctive element through the use of mirror bricks that create a shimmering, reflective quality. Key Challenges:
One of the primary challenges in this project was working with non-orthogonal angles in the building design, with one corner of the site being 94 degrees rather than 90 degrees. This required careful planning and custom cutting of bricks to maintain the intended aesthetic while accommodating the irregular geometry. Another significant challenge was creating the appearance of a homogenous brick façade while incorporating window openings. The solution involved reforming bricks into slips that could wrap around the front and underside of window detailing, preserving the continuity of the brick pattern and texture. The development of the Black Volcano brick itself represented both a challenge and a solution. The architect was seeking a specific finish that would complement both the matte black engineering bricks and the mirror bricks, with a unique light-responsive quality. EBM Supplies embraced this challenge, developing a custom brick with pearlescent properties that change appearance throughout the day as light conditions vary.
