Volcano House

Description
Coate Street, also known as “Volcano House ”, is a striking residential development in Shoreditch, London, designed by Urban Mesh as their personal home. The building reinterprets the dark facades of its urban context through a bold and contemporary lens. The façade features a refined composition of textures, tones and finishes – delivering a dynamic visual effect that shifts with light and perspective. The designs leverage innovative brick detailing to create a home that feels both contextual and completely unique.
Requirements
EBM played a a pivotal role in the façade design and material specification, going beyond standard supply. Initially approached with a vision involving black stock bricks and projected headers, EBM proposed a more compelling solution – pairing sleek black wirecut bricks with a bespoke handmade glaze brick, “Black Volcano.” This required deep technical understanding and coordination across design, manufacturing, and instlallation stages. EBM also advised on custom detailing, including 94-degree corners and tailored brick slips, ensuring the architectural vision was fully realised.
