Turnmill, London

Turnmill is an iconic new office building that marks the gateway to Clerkenwell, home to the highest concentration of architects in the capital.

Developed by Derwent London to the designs of Piercy & Company, this elegant and charismatic building proved to be a true labour of love for everyone involved in the project.

European Building Materials supplied the special handmade Roman-format Petersen Tegl bricks used for the beautifully detailed textured brick façade – it culminates in a perforated brick parapet surrounding a roof terrace with views over Clerkenwell, St Paul’s and the City beyond.  Internally, the brick carries through as a fine detail inside the white organic atrium.

The colour palette is a bespoke blend of three fair-faced shades to complement the light sandstone of the Old Sessions House opposite. The site was originally used to stable London Underground workhorses.

Over 85,000 of the handmade, 528mm long, Danish bricks were almost entirely handset, with precast brickwork limited to the lintels.  The shimmering facades are subtly detailed, with deep-set windows chamfered at different angles to allow plenty of daylight into the interior, curved building corners, and pointing that enhances the shadow effects on the brickwork.
